Ronaldo Plans UK Move… As A Marketing Student
Brazilian football legend Ronaldo is rumoured to be moving to the UK to become a marketing man under the mentorship of WPP chief Sir Martin Sorrell.
Considered by pundits as one of the best footballers of all time, Ronaldo’s move seems on the face of it, to be a slightly bizarre one. But then many’s the sports personality that has made a small fortune from sponsorship and endorsement – Ronaldo seems to be taking a longer term and more holistic view. As a retired sportsman, his value as the posterboy for most brands is diminished considerably, but a shrewd move into sports marketing and the launch in 2010 of his Brazilian agency 9ine (a joint venture with WPP) show that the football legend is a canny businessman.
Ronaldo is quoted as saying of new mentor, Sorrell, “I won’t leave him alone. I’ll be asking him questions the whole day, just like a striker. He’s going to have to tell me everything”.
Sorrell responded by saying that “we have a joint venture with Ronaldo – 9ine – which has already had great success in Brazil with clients Claro and Duracell. He’ll be working with us on that in the UK. We’ve also been working with him on the World Cup and Olympics.”
